| Q. |
I'm already running a virus scanner, why do I need Grr!? |
| A. |
Virus scanners are very good at recognizing viruses that are already described in their definition files. They're almost useless against viruses that
they don't know about. When a new virus hits, it can spread company or worldwide within hours, and it often takes the virus scanner manufacturer
several days to release a virus update. By then, the damage is done. However, Grr! protects your system during these periods of vulnerability,
as well as against non-virus attacks which scanners can't catch, such as a hacker installing a trojan program. Think of Grr! as a boot covering
your virus scanner's Achillies heel.

| Q. |
I made changes to my registry, but Grr! didn't pop up a warning. Why? |
| A. |
The Windows registry contains many thousands of entries, and is updated continuously (often several times a second) in normal operation.
It is impractical to monitor every registry access, and an alert generated from every change would render the system unusable.
Instead, Grr! watches those areas of the registry that deal with system startup, file associations, and other areas of vulnerability
used by malicious programs to install themselves. See the Overview page for a list of some of these items.

| Q. |
Does running Grr! slow down my system? |
| A. |
Grr! uses very efficient methods of system monitoring, and the performance impact of
the monitoring is negligible. However, due to
differences in the way Win95/98/ME handle internal processes (some items must be polled), there can be a slight delay on those systems
before changes are recognized. Changes made on Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 systems are recognized and alerts are generated nearly instantaneously.

| Q. |
How can I disable Grr! so I don't get warnings while installing a new software program? |
| A. |
Grr! has a Disable button that appears on its alert box. Clicking this button will disable Grr! until you re-enable it using the Control
Panel applet, or until you reboot your system. Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 users may also stop the Grr! system service.

| Q. |
I'm trying to install my nifty new widget program, but the setup fails/generates errors. |
| A. |
You may have Grr! set to automatically reject registry changes AND not to pop up any warnings. Many software installation programs
try to make changes to the areas that Grr! monitors. Grr! could be undoing or preventing your setup program from completing correctly
and you wouldn't see the notices. Either turn on pop-up notices and accept any changes during the installation or temporarily disable
Grr! when you receive the first alert.

| Q. |
Why are there two Grr! programs in my Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 Control Panel? |
| A. |
Grr! installs both the normal Grr! program and the Grr! Server utility on Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 systems. The Grr! Server program allows you to set
Grr! policies from a central sever on a network instead of having to manually configure each machine running Grr!. See the
Managing Grr! on Multiple Machines page for details.
