When you install Grr! on an NT machine, you will see two control panel applets instead of one. The second one is called Grr! Server, and controls the network server settings. The very first time you enable the network server, you will have to reboot your machine. After that, you may enable or disable the server without booting. Since Grr! Server uses a combination of share permissions and NTFS file permissions for security, we recommend that you only enable the server on machines where the boot drive is formatted with NTFS.

You may choose to hide the Grr! Server applet from users if you wish. See the Optional Registry Settings section below for instructions.

The checkboxes on the server settings dialog (see below) are tri-state. If a checkbox is checked, then that setting is checked for the client. If a checkbox is cleared, then that setting is cleared for the client. If the checkbox is grayed out, then that setting does not override the client's choice.

Text boxes on the server settings dialog work in a similar fashion. Anything you specify will override the client's settings. If you leave a text box blank, the client's setting will not be affected.

    • User Interface Options
Select one of the radio buttons in this section to control how the client's machine will interact with the foreground user. If you select Standard alert, then Grr! will behave normally when an alert occurs. If you select Custom alert, then Grr! will display your custom message before presenting the standard alert dialog box.

    • Timing Settings
Click this button to access the Timings dialog. Any changes you make on the Timings dialog will override the timings on the client. You should never need to change these settings unless directed to do so by Greyware tech support.

    • Email Settings
Click this button to access the Email dialog. The Email dialog lets you specify whether or not to force the client to send email, and what SMTP server, FROM address, and TO address to use.

      Extra Definitions
Extra Files, Directories and Associations Settings Screen

    • Extra Definitions
The Extra Definitions dialog lets you specify ExtraDirs, ExtraFiles, and ExtraAssociations (see Optional Registry Settings for an explanation of these three terms). By adding files, dirs, or associations here, you can instantly protect all the machines on your network against new threats without having to edit the registry on each machine.

You may use expandable environment strings in any of the text boxes. For example, the MAIL FROM parameter could be set to %computername%@yourdomain.com. Each client will replace %computername% with its own computer name. Similarly, you may use %windir%, %systemroot%, or any other system-level environment string in a file path.

Email names may be either plain or decorated. A plain name is one like person@place.com. A decorated name is one like "Tech Support" <techsupport@yourdomain.com>. The quotation marks are required if the decorated portion of the name contains space characters.

Clients update their settings at startup, shutdown, and at regular intervals while running. If a client has checked the Send email only when dial-up connection detected checkbox on the Email Setup dialog, then the client will only attempt to refresh its settings from the server when a RAS connection is active. Clients also refresh their settings any time their control panel applet is opened and then closed.

Caution: Modifying Registry entries requires basic familiarity with the Windows Registry and its operations. Incorrect changes to the Registry can result in unpredictable, perhaps non-repairable, damage and a non-bootable system. Don't attempt these changes unless you are comfortable with the process.

  • Hiding the Server Applet
If you don't want the Grr! Server control panel applet to show on an NT machine, you may edit the registry after installing Grr!. Change the value:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
      Software
        Greyware
          Greyware Registry Rearguard
            Parameters

       from ShowServerApplet: REG_SZ: True
         to ShowServerApplet: REG_SZ: False

on any machines where you don't want the Grr! Server control panel applet to show. This setting may also be preset during installation if you use the grr.ini installation template file described in the Administrative Options and Remote Install portion of the Setup and Configuration section above.

  • Including Additional Files, Dirs, and Associations
There are three user-settable values in the Registry that allow you to extend the coverage Grr! provides: ExtraDirs, ExtraFiles, and ExtraAssociations.

These three values are created during installation, but default to blank. If you've set Grr! to get its settings from Grr! Server (see the Grr! Server section above), these items can be specifed in the Grr! Server Control Panel Applet. If you wish to add these items on a stand-alone copy of Grr!, you will need to edit the Registry to include them.

    Grr! stores its settings in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
      Software
        Greyware
          Greyware Registry Rearguard
            Parameters

The values are of the type REG_MULTI_SZ. On NT, put one entry per line when you edit a value. On Win95/Win98, the values will appear to be of type BINARY, because Win95/Win98's Regedit program does not know how to display REG_MULTI_SZ. However, you may still edit the values: Make sure each entry is followed by one byte of zero, and the last entry by two bytes of zero.

      ExtraDirs
List any extra directories you want Grr! to watch for you. Grr! only monitors additions to directories, not deletions or changes.

      ExtraFiles
List any extra files you want Grr! to watch for you. Grr! monitors changes to the entire file. Monitored files must be less than 64K in size.

      ExtraAssociations
List any extra file associations you want Grr! to watch for you. Include the leading period (example: .cpp or .wri) for each entry you make.
