In order to run a system service correctly using a user account, you may be required to manually set your user account to have the "Log on as a service" right. The method of doing this varies between versions of Windows NT and Windows 2000/XP/2003.

To set the "Log on as a service" user right on Windows 2000/XP/2003:

Bring up the System Policies program from the Administrative Tools group on the Start Menu. Select the User Rights Assignment from the Domain Policies section. Highlight the Log on as a service item in the Policy list. Select Security from the Action item on the menu. You'll be presented with the Policy Setting screen.

Click the Add button to select the user account to which you wish to grant this right.

Your screen will then show that the selected user has been granted the right.

To set the "Log on as a service" user right on Windows NT:

Bring up the User Manager program from the Administrative Tools group on the Start Menu. Select User Rights from the Policies menu item. You'll be presented with the User Rights Policy screen.

Make sure that the Show Advanced User Rights box is checked.

Use the drop-down list to select the Log on as a service right. If you don't see the right in the list, you don't have the Show Advanced User Rights box checked.

Click the Add button to browse for the user account you are going to use for system service and click OK. This will add your user to the list of users with the Log on as a service right.
