Rum > Remote User Manager - Overview

Greyware's Remote User Manager (RUM) allows Win Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 administrators to delegate common user administration tasks to non-administrators without sacrificing overall system security.

Unlike the domain user management system tools available with the operating system, RUM does not require creation of special groups or assignment of unwanted user rights in order to delegate privileges to non-administrators. It also provides a complete audit trail of all changes by logging all access and changes to the Event Viewer log.

RUM Architecture RUM uses a clear, easy-to-use browser-based interface so that users with given account privileges can remotely view and change user accounts from any machine with a web-browser, without having to be running on a domain controller. Users have full group and user management features, including real-time account lookup.

Since RUM uses the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) web server, all of the standard security and administration features of the server are available. Communication between the RUM server and the web browser can be over standard HTTP or via secure connection using HTTPS, and all of the standard challenge-response and/or basic authentication features are available.

Requirements
Runs on Windows NT4/2K/XP/2003 with Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) 4, 5 or 6. Both Intel and Alpha binaries available. (IIS6 will give a 404 error until you change the security policies to let gwrum.dll to run as an ISAPI component. This is the default operating system behavior.)
